Rim Country sits at just about 5000’ elevation and, consequently, our locale experiences ideal climates all four seasons of the year. For obvious reasons, this feature is ideal for outdoor powersport adventuring. Getting a little warm in the Summer? Simply go north or east 12-25 miles and up in elevation another 2000 feet. You’ll find spectacular views for miles and temps 10-15 degrees cooler than Payson proper. Feeling a little too cool in the winter months? Set your GPS for Rye, Jakes Corner and Roosevelt Lake. Ambient temps average 10 or more degrees warmer than those right in town. Spring, Fall and cusp months are absolutely perfect for yondering in and around this quaint, beautiful, whimsical cowboy mountain town.

Payson’s “Outlaw Trail”

This trail roughly parallels the modern AZ Hwy 87. It runs from Rye, AZ up through Upper and Lower Round Valley and will end up on the Tonto Apache Indian Reservation at the Mazatzal Casino. 12 miles one way, this easy to moderately rated trail will present some rutted sections and some climbs. Outlaw Trail takes about an hour to run and when combined the previously mentioned FR 414 trail turns into an incredibly scenic loop with no backtracking.

If you’re down for a challenge, and don’t mind a bit of extra heat (great in Winter, tolerable in Summer) this is the trail for your adventures. Roughly coursing along Tonto Creek, this beautiful trail is an old Western horseback route to the 1916 stage stop of Jake’s Corner, AZ. Ups and down and sharp turns make us give this route a moderate to difficult rating. Travel time can be up to 4 hours in combination with the Outlaw Trail. One can easily do 40+ miles on this destination ride. Along the way, swimming holes provide excellent reprieves from summer temperatures.
