This trail is accessed as an Eastbound Spur from the aforementioned PATS Houston Loop. Beginning in Mayfield Canyon (Star Valley, AZ), it bounces merrily along under the the shady canopy of the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in the World. 12 miles out and back over some challenging climbs and returning descents make this beauty of a ride an intermediate to difficult task. Once at trail’s end, feel free to ascend to the the top of Diamond Point and search for crystals that abound. Locals call them “Payson diamonds”. If hungry and parched, the Double D restaurant, bar, and general store can cure all those desires also. Round trip should take 2 ½ to 4 hours total.

This is a highly regarded and very well known rock crawling and 4x4 enthusiast’s destination. Off the Houston Mesa Road one can expect to find some challenging climbing obstacles and thrills. If said events seem more than bargained for, there are usually side trails to circumvent them. Nestled under the the Mogollon Rim, natural beauty is virtually everywhere. Approx ___ miles out and back, this ride can be accomplished in 2-3 hours. This trail would rate in the moderate to difficult categories.
Houston’s Pocket Cabin Trail

Out and down in elevation from Lion Springs in the far east side of Star Valley, this trail is actually sections of other established trails to bring one to an early 1900’s ranch and still occasionally active cowboy line cabin and cattle tank. An old fruit orchard and fields can still be seen. Moderately challenging, there are some off camber ascents and descents along with a couple miles of rocky terrain. Historically striking, this our and back trail will be a longer run of 3-4 hours and approximately 25 miles of trail distance.
